'Lay her i’ th’ earth,
And from her fair and unpolluted flesh
May violets spring...'
Hamlet, Act 5 Scene 1
The story of poor Ophelia, known for her innocence and naivety, comes to a tragic end when, overwhelmed by grief over the death of her father and conflicted by her manipulative relationship with Hamlet, Ophelia descends into madness and drowns herself in a lake.
In the Victorian age, violets held special significance in the Language of Flowers, reaching the point where the violet flower's popularity became a manic obsession and a constant visual presence in daily life, from foodstuffs and medicine to fashion and perfumery. Purple violets symbolized devotion and white violets stood for innocence (both applicable to Ophelia's predicament). The word 'Violet' comes from the Latin name 'Viola' which means thoughts occupied with love. Violets typically have heart-shaped leaves and asymmetrical flowers. So the next time you see a violet remember…a violet is not just a pretty face. It carries centuries of symbolism, stories of love and loss, humility, and devotion. It’s a testament to nature’s ability to inspire us and weave intricate narratives around even the smallest of its creations.
Our Ophelia blend opens with bright bergamot and a warm afternoon breeze after a sudden spring rain. A green heart of crushed violet leaves shivers onto the skin with a dewy, grassy coolness. The commanding finish is an unexpected, dramatic juxtaposition of radiant golden amber, softly lingering sensual musk and the comforting warmth of ebony wood. Mysterious yet refined. Surprisingly masculine to gender-neutral leaning.
