The story of poor Ophelia, known for her innocence and naivety, comes to a tragic end when, overwhelmed by grief over the death of her father and conflicted by her manipulative relationship with Hamlet, Ophelia descends into madness and drowns herself in a lake. 
 
In the Victorian age, violets held special significance in the Language of Flowers, reaching the point where the violet flower's popularity became a manic obsession and a constant visual presence in daily life, from foodstuffs and medicine to fashion and perfumery. Purple violets symbolized devotion and white violets stood for innocence (both applicable to Ophelia's predicament). The word 'Violet' comes from the Latin name 'Viola' which means thoughts occupied with love.
