Metamorphosis is a biological process that involves an abrupt change in an animal. The word “metamorphosis” is Greek, and it means to change or transform in shape. But that definition barely scratches the surface of the concept. Metamorphosis is eerily emblematic of spooky Scorpio season - the sign which represents intense transformation, secrets, and the power to survive under extreme conditions; a symbolic embrace of the circle of life and death. In folklore, the concept of metamorphosis is rooted in themes of transformation (alchemy), hidden danger, and the Underworld.
Metamorphosis in the natural world manifests in plants, animals, insects, and mythic beasts in ways both seen and unseen. Poison plants like hemlock, datura, and deadly nightshade have long been associated with the Underworld and alchemical thresholds between life-giving medicine and a quick death. The shadow figures and quiet sentinels - the scorpions and black widows - represent hidden dangers and the subconcious mind. Birds of prey and vultures who dine exclusively on remains represent the bridge between life and death, purification, and the damp, fertile earth where all things rot and break down to feed new life, just as the falling leaves drop and decay at the first hints of cool air. And then there are the wild creatures that literally transform by shedding a shell, skin, or form to pass into the next phase of their existence (or consciousness): caterpillar to butterfly, tadpole to frog, snakes, cicadas, crustaceans, etc. - the ultimate symbols of rebirth and evolution. Our Metamorphosis bars feature a white base with an electric palette of bright pink, purple, yellow, and orange, accented by deep black swirls. Two bars together showcase the beautiful butterfly swirl pattern, albeit like a Rorschach test. If the colors don't immediately grab your attention, then the aromatic palette surely will! Bubbly grapefruit, orange and lime tickle your senses on the opening. Warm ginger adds a lil kick of spiciness to the heart of creamy gardenia.
