In Greek mythology, Medea is known as a powerful enchantress of divine descent, a priestess of Hecate, a student (and niece) of Circe, and a princess. Medea represents the epitome of sovereign female power and why dangerous women are labeled "witch" as a slur. She is simultaneously alluring and terrifying. Medea used her powers for both good/healing and bad (often very, very bad).
In the stories, Medea falls for and marries Jason (of the Argonauts), and with her magical skills, she assists him in many successful adventures. They bear a handful of children, but this is no fairy tale with a happily ever after ending. Jason eventually abandons Medea to marry another, Princess Glauce, for promises of status and power. An enraged and heartbroken Medea carefully plots her revenge and crafts a deadly poison. Medea offers Glauce a beautiful golden dress and gold crown as a wedding present and a "peace offering", which Glauce joyfully accepts. Unbeknownst to all, Medea has soaked both the dress and crown in poison. Upon contact with Glauce's skin, the robe begins to strip the flesh from her bones and the crown bursts into unquenchable flame, consuming the princess and then her father, King Creon of Corinth, who rushed to embrace his dying daughter. Is her story one of empowerment or victimhood? Is she truly a terrible witch or is she a woman who uses her skills to exact vengeful justice?
