The term “hedge witch” dates back to medieval Europe and describes solitary women who lived at the outskirts of towns (often marked by a physical boundary, usually a hedgerow), and who utilized their knowledge of plants for herbal remedies. Both feared and revered, the hedgewitch was the healer that townsfolk relied upon when all other options failed (those options being the ones that the town doctor offered as solutions, like bloodletting with leeches, dosing with toxic compounds like mercury or arsenic, and unregulated use of opioids). The hedge itself was not some manicured boxwood hedge of modern sububurbia, but a thorny, brambly wild tangle of growth. Hedges are magick places, liminal spaces that belong neither to the forest nor the "village". To venture beyond the hedge was to risk mortal danger because beyond it is the deep, dark woods and the Unknown, woven in magic and mystery and certain danger; it was the borderlands between civilization and the wild.
The hedge is also symbolic - representing the veil between our world and the Otherworld - that of the fae, the spirit world, and death. A hedgerider is one (often a shaman, but witches, too) who journeys to these other realms seeking wisdom, healing, and to speak with spirit guides. When we ride the hedge, we are in both worlds at once.
Hedgewitch is moody, layered, shadowy, and just a bit sensual. It's wild autumn magick that will put you under its cozy spell. Leaves fall like rain on a blustery autumn afternoon. Your nose tickles with the scent of ripe berries, a soft juicy brightness that slips into a heart of velvety, dark rose. You wrap your well-worn leather jacket tighter as you venture boldy beyond the brambles and into the darkness of the woods. Earthy patchouli, warm embers, and a hint of smooth vanilla surrounds you in a grounding embrace. Rich yet quietly seductive. What awaits you in the dark?
Usage: Spray lightly, paying particular attention to pulse points, neck, behind ears, chest/heart chakra, inner elbows, behind knees. Allow to air dry; do NOT rub. Repeat as desired. Do not spray directly onto face. Avoid contact with eyes, armpits and mucous membranes. Do not apply to broken, irritated, or itching skin. May be skin sensitizing to some individuals. Perform a 24hr patch test on a small area of skin if you are particularly prone to sensitivity before widespread application. Discontinue use immediately if any irritation occurs. Not intended for use by children under age 10.
