The evocative foxglove is known by many names - cutesy nicknames that contradict its dangers: "goblins' thimbles", "fairy gloves", "fairy bells", and more, each name tied to its own tale. Springing from a rosette of soft downy leaves, they tower above most of the other plants in our flower beds, with elongated bell-like flowers, speckled pink to attract the bees. Beautiful to behold, yet deadly in the wrong doses, they have captured the collective imagination for centuries, featuring heavily in all our favourite childhood legends as apparel for fairies, goblins and elves, or gloves for the foxes and the fey.
Where foxgloves grow there is said to be a doorway to the faerie realm. Some faeries make their homes in this flower, others wear it. When the long stalk of the flower bows its head, it is said the fae are walking by. It is also said that if a person were to pick the flowers, the faerie folk would seek their revenge as the flower is loved by the fae. Other tales tell that it's unlucky to bring this flower indoors as it encourages the presence of witches. They could be useful, however, in identifying a changeling (a faerie disguised as a human child), but dosing anyone with foxglove is a serious affair. Digitalis contains toxins, including cardiac glycosides, that stimulate the heart, and even the tiniest amount can be fatal.
