Its wood was used to adorn the outside of windows and door frames to protect the inhabitants from the fae. And it was planted in cemetaries to allow the dead to rest in peace. The elder has a strong and storied connection to the fairy realm. The shrub itself represents a gateway to the Otherworld, as is expected for a hedgerow shrub. But there's a more interesting story here.... In both Celtic and Danish folklore, there are similar tales told of the hyldre folk (the hidden people) and their connection to the Elder. The shrub is believed to be magical and inhabited by an elder mother who is possibly a faerie queen, known as The Dark Mother, the Midsummer guardian of the hedgerows. She'll give you her wisdom and medicine, if you ask, but she tolerates no disrespect; it is essential to ask her leave before taking any branches. If you fail to do so, misfortune will befall you- your cattle may die and your barn may burn down or you might find yourself trapped in the fairy realm for all the rest of your days.
