The constellation Corvus represents the raven (or crow), Apollo’s sacred bird in Greek mythology. In the story, a white raven was tasked with watching over Coronis, one of Apollo’s lovers, and to report on his activities. When the raven reported Coronis’ infidelity to Apollo, the god was so enraged that the bird did nothing to stop it that he flung a curse upon it, scorching the raven’s feathers black. That, the legend goes, is why all ravens are black, symbolizing transformation and the consequences of betrayal. This tale highlights the raven’s dual nature—both a harbinger of truth and a keeper of secrets.
In animal symbolism, crows and ravens are often interchangeable, holding powerful and often contradictory meanings across cultures and mythologies. In some traditions, these dark-winged birds are considered messengers of misfortune or death. However, many contemporary interpretations emphasize their role as guides and protectors, encouraging introspection and adaptability. Whether as a good or foreboding sign, the raven’s presence urges one to pay attention to life’s deeper meanings.
