Old Folklore of the Buttercup, Gold of the Earth-Spirit:
Long ago, when the land was young and spirits walked the fields, it’s said the buttercup sprang from spilled treasure. An earth-wight (an elemental or fae) guarding gold beneath an old hill, was tricked by a cunning traveller who stole a single coin. As the coin struck the earth, it sank into the soil and bloomed into the first buttercup, bright as fire, soft as silk.
Ever since, the buttercup has been called “The Wight’s Warning”, a sign not to dig where the gold glows brightest. Those who picked too many from a single patch were thought to wake the hill-spirits, who might steal their voice, their luck, or lead them in circles until sunset.
Some old folk would whisper a charm when stepping through buttercup fields: "Gold below, gold above, I take none, I seek no trove." -Woodlarking
Buttercups, with their delicate yellow petals and bright presence, have long captured the imagination and wonder of humans. They have been linked in various cultures as a symbol of good fortune, prosperity, and protection, and have long been associated with joy, happiness, and love. In ancient folklore, buttercups were believed to possess the power of divination and were often used in love spells and rituals to attract romance. In Celtic mythology, these flowers were associated with the fairies and were believed to have magickal properties that could grant wishes or bring luck. Buttercups, growing in sunny meadows, were believed to mark places where the fae danced or rested. Picking them could attract fairy mischief - or blessings, depending on your luck!

Our Bonny Buttercup bars are made with real buttermilk! Why? Well, fun fact.... folklore suggests that cows grazing in buttercup-rich fields gave the best, creamiest butter. This belief was so strong it influenced farming superstitions, but the truth is that buttercups are actually poisonous to grazing animals. However, the cool spring season when buttercups are prevalent also means that grasses and other nutritious forage is in abundance, which is the real reason that butter is betta ;) during the spring. Cool, but how does that relate to soap? Buttermilk is rich in milk fats and high in lactic acid, which makes for a great natural exfoliant and a lovely moisturizing experience. So yeah, buttermilk does make soap better, too!
